This course will bring art and creative writing students into intimate contact with the landscapes and culture of Chile and Peru. The course goes beyond strictly academic study to include active, creative engagement—the making of art—under the influence of the places we will visit. Students will be involved in daily exercises that will immerse them in the landscapes and lives of local populations, while also deepening their understanding of local artistic traditions. The study program will offer multiple opportunities for student artists and writers to collaborate with each other and to learn across disciplines. Featured visits include the museum houses of the poet Pablo Neruda in Chile and the Machu Picchu World Heritage Site in Peru. Writing and art students should consider how international study will expand their knowledge beyond their own tradition as well as challenge and stimulate their own creative work.
