                                Location: Karlsruhe, Germany

This summer program, in collaboration with our exchange partner, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, offers an intensive experience that includes travel to 3 German cities and factory visits.  The cost is kept low due to assistance from the German government.

This program is geared toward juniors and seniors.

How much does the Summer School cost?
*****The enrollment fee is €800 paid to the host institution.
       >>Includes: tuition fee, accommodation and travel expenses from Karlsruhe to Dresden and from Dresden to Berlin.
              **Please notice that the fee does not cover travel costs to Karlsruhe or from Berlin back to your home country.
Tuition Fee
♦There is no tuition fee at HsKA, only an administrative fee of 60 Euros per semester.
:) As a rule, exchange students from partner universities which have an agreement with HsKA, are not required to pay the HsKA administrative fee.

Budgeting
***Expect to pay approximately 600 Euros per month. Your expenses will include rent, utilities, food, household items, transport, entertainment, clothing, insurance, books, semester university fees, etc.

Accomodation
**Accommodation is included in the program fee.
***Exchange students can stay at the Europahaus (students’ hostel) on campus.
         ^^The hostel is located on the northwestern edge of the city core between the Karlsruhe Palace and
                  the College of Engineering and the College   of Education.  It is a 10 minute walk from the City Center opposite the city park/zoo.

Housing
♦Student halls are managed by Student Services
♦International Office of HsKA has a small number of rooms in a hall of residence. Applicants are usually placed on a one-semester waiting list.
♦There are 22 residence halls with 2, 790 rooms in Karlsruhe and Pfrozheim
The waiting list for a room is unfortunately long, so you are strongly recommend to apply for a room as early as possible.
    ***Applications can be submitted up to six months before the move-in date


Meals
♦Karlsruhe students can buy subsidized meals for about 2 to 3.50 Euros

Local Transportation
⇔It takes about 7 Kilometers by car or coach to get to the hostel
⇒TheTrain Station is about 2.5 Kilometers away from the hostel
⇔Rail services at discounted prices are available for students
Public Transportation in Karlsruhe
    ***Limited Semester Ticket: The obligatory membership fee of 62,70 € per semester for the students' services. Includes a limited 
         semester ticket for the Karlsruhe Public Transport System KVV. Valid from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    ***Full Semester Ticket: The obligatory membership fee of 127,90 Euros per semester for Students' services.  Includes unlimited use of all 
         public transportation in Karlsruhe and its surroundings for six months (September to February or October to March, and March to August or
        April to September).
    ***Individual Fares: For those who do not want or need a full semester ticket, you can buy individual tickets or day passes for different  
         regions/zones.

⇔Cycling or Biking
    ***Using a bike to move around Karlsruhe is a cheap and good alternative to move around.
    ***There are special bicycle routes in Karlsruhe,
    ***It is mandatory to lock your bikes
    *** Bikes are not allowed on the tram during the rush hour from 6 to 9 a.m.


Like to Travel for FUN, No problem
♦Travel within Germany and western Europe is easy
♦The mode of transportation especially in
Germany is the train. The German railroad is called the Deutsche Bahn (DB)
.
    ***Deutsche Bahn offers a discount card called the Bahncard, which gets you substantial discounts (25%, 50%, or even 100%) on tickets.
    ***Make sure to purchase the ticket before boarding the train.
Schönes Wochenende Ticket:  is a great way for you and a group of friends to take a weekend trip at an affordable price.
    ***It costs only 39 Euros, is valid for one weekend day
    ***Can be used by up to five people for all of Germany.
    ***Only valid on slower trains (Regionalbahn, Regional Express and Inter Regional).
CarPooling
    ***A cheap option to travel in Germany
    ***Organized system for the entire country
    ***You can catch a ride with people driving to the same destination as you
    ***you only chip in on the price of gas
    ***This service is commonly used throughout Germany by all people, young and old.


Types of Insurance
1. Health Insurance
      ♦By law, without valid insurance students cannot register for classes.
2.  Personal Liability
      ♦Offers protection against third party claims in case of damages caused by you. Includes insurance against damages to
           student residence property.
3. Household Effects:
     ♦Covers damages or theft of personal property.
