About the Program
University of Fort Hare has two campuses in Alice and East London. The university is politically active and committed to community-engagement. Community-based research is also a focus of the university. Former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela is among the distinguished alumni of Fort Hare. The beach along the Indian Ocean is closely located to the East London campus and a couple hours by bus from Alice. Alice is home to cultural heritage sites, art galleries, and the University of Fort Hare archives. Overall, the University of Fort Hare campuses provide an ideal location for experiencing true South African diversity and culture.

Fort Hare is a vibrant, equitable and sustainable African university, committed to teaching and research excellence at the service of its students, scholars and wider community. In a place once torn apart by discrimination, the university focuses on generating new knowledge and tolerance in the post-apartheid South Africa. The University of Fort Hare is the oldest historically black university in Southern Africa.

The university's campus in East London has 8,548 students. The city population is 40,000. The campus at Alice has approximately another 4,200 students. The school has five main faculties: Education, Law, Management & Commerce, Science & Agriculture, and Social Sciences & Humanities, which all are offered up to the doctoral level.
Cost
The approximate cost per semester is $9,500. This estimate includes room and board, mandatory health insurance, airfare, local transportation, miscellaneous expenses, passport and photos, visa, and the study abroad administrative fee. MSU tuition and fees must be added on to the total cost.

Requirements
Students must obtain study permits.  It is the responsibility of prospective students to apply for these in adequate time from the relevant South African mission, including medical coverage from a South African recognized and registered health service provider, in compliance with the Immigration Act. First time study permits should be applied for from the Embassy or High Commission within the country of application.

Minimum GPA: 2.5

Class status: Must be at least a sophomore to study abroad
