YOUR ASA EXPERIENCE

You will receive individualized support from ASA’s advisors and staff throughout your program application process, while you are abroad, and when you return.

Before you depart we will work with you and the staff at your home institution to help you prepare for your time abroad by giving you personal access to our Student Success program, which will help you maximize your experience in your host country. You will also receive a detailed pre-departure orientation guide which will help you know what to pack, what to expect when you arrive, and how to stay safe while abroad.

Once you arrive in San Jose you will participate in our onsite orientation with the other ASA students in your group. ASA’s site director will introduce you to your host city and culture through orientation and multiple events during the program. Our intentionally small group sizes allow ASA’s students to get to know one another and are an aspect of our programs for which our alumni consistently express their appreciation. You will have opportunities to meet other students and lots of new people through your classes, social events and optional language partners.

ASA programs include excursions, volunteer opportunities, housing, meals, academic credits, transcripts, mobile phones, airport pick-up on arrival, medical insurance and more! Contact ASA or your advisor to learn about ASA’s Price Guarantee for all of our programs.

Discover the plazas and gardens where musicians, skateboarders and artists pop-up to put on a show. Find your favorite tacos, soups and other culinary dishes at a small café. In a city where intriguingly most street addresses are just descriptions of buildings you’ll discover lots of interesting places in San Jose and its suburbs. Study at Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, the largest private university in Costa Rica with the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS). With our central location and classes which mostly take place Monday-Thursday, you will have many options to travel in one of the most beautiful countries on earth.

Semester: This program is for students at all levels (beginner to advanced) of Spanish language. You will study Spanish grammar and conversation as well as Costa Rican culture with classmates from around the world. Electives are taught in English in a number of different subject areas including: Social Justice, Sustainable Development, Environmental Studies, Human Rights, and Cultural Studies. Language level placement exams are taken at the beginning of the program. Contact us to find out more about the internship and research opportunities available.

Quarter: This program is open to students with all levels (beginner to advanced) of Spanish language. All students take the same three classes. You will study Spanish, learning vocabulary and conversation as well as Costa Rican culture with classmates from around the world. Your second course in seminar format introduces you to debates about culture, diversity and development in Central America and includes educational excursions. With content delivered through films and seminar structure your third course will introduce you to social, historical and ideological frameworks. With our participative learning environment, we provide a quarter program that goes beyond a traditional classroom experience.

Language level placement exams are taken at the beginning of the program. A full list of classes for this program can be found on the ASA website through the link at the top of this page.
