Port Elizabeth, South Africa - Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
The
SCSU study abroad program in South Africa is located in Port Elizabeth
on the coast of the Indian Ocean. The host university, Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan University, is located on a nature reserve where it is not
uncommon to see local wildlife such as monkeys and antelope. NMMU has a
convenient campus with the lecture halls, library, cafeteria, and
residence halls all within easy walking distance of each other, and the
beach is just a stone's throw away.
Program Objective
St.
Cloud State University participates in an exchange program with Nelson
Mandela Metropolitan University (formerly the University of Port
Elizabeth). This program offers students the opportunity to study the
art, music, culture, economy, history, politics, and many other aspects
of South Africa through a personal living and studying experience.
As
a result of the cooperation between SCSU and NMMU, three different
study abroad programs have been created to allow the maximum number of
students the chance to study abroad in South Africa.
- Direct Enrollment
- Open to SCSU students who are sophomores or above, this program
allows students to directly enroll in all courses offered at NMMU,
provided that they meet the course prerequisites. Students can complete
courses towards their major, minor or general education credits.
- Short-term Study Abroad
- Students enroll in Ethnic Studies 305 during the spring semester.
This course serves as a means to prepare you for a spring break travel
experience and will help you to reflect on your experiences when you
return. Contact CIS or the Ethnic Studies Department for more details.
- First Year Experience- General Education
- This program is targeted towards first-year and other students who
are interested in an early exposure to South Africa. SCSU students will
make the inaugural voyage during the Spring semester, having
participated in the one-credit African Studies 199 pre-departure
course. Contact CIS or Multicultural Student Services for more details.
